The 2018 AHCT Spanish Golden Age Theater Symposium will take place April 12–14 in El Paso, Texas. These dates coincide with the Siglo de Oro Spanish Theater Festival at the Chamizal National Memorial, April 11–14, 2018. Sessions will begin Thursday morning, April 12, and end Saturday afternoon, April 14. The meeting of the officers of the AHCT will take place Wednesday, April 11, from 9am–12 noon, with the meeting of the Board of Directors to follow, from 1:30–5pm.

PLENARY SPEAKERS: Paula Rodríguez and Sandra Arpa (Teatro Inverso)
Paula Rodríguez and Sandra Arpa began their career together in 2011. They formed a collaboration in order to explore new scenic languages for the adaptation of Spanish Classics, taking special interest in the Spanish Golden Age. Both actresses have participated in courses with masters from The SITI Company, Theatre du Soleil, and have trained at Royal Central School of Speech & Drama or RESAD. They specialize in physical theatre (Anthropological theatre, Suzuki, Viewpoints) as well as text work. They have also worked together in several Theatre productions including En esta vida todo es verdad y todo es mentira at the ‘CNTC‘ National Classical Spanish Company.

Del verso clásico a la performance : Una nueva forma de habitar los clásicos. Introducción a nuestra metodología Bodily Poetics y ejercicios prácticos para combinar el verso barroco, dramaturgia contemporánea y performance.

La Compañía Teatro Inverso lleva a cabo un proceso investigación práctica con el objetivo de aportar herramientas nuevas al actor contemporáneo en el estudio y profundización de textos clásicos del Siglo de Oro Español así como en su trabajo con el verso barroco y la creación de dramaturgias contemporáneas.

En este taller, nos centraremos en la conexión entre la palabra y el cuerpo del actor introduciendo las bases de nuestra metodología llamada Bodily Poetics. Para ello utilizaremos distintas técnicas de entrenamiento actoral, que en su mayoría beben de los fundamentos del Teatro Antropológico, del Teatro Clásico y del Storytelling. Esto nos permitirá abordar los textos clásicos desde nuevas perspectivas para comprender tanto su contenido como su estructura formal. En esta búsqueda, la palabra del actor es habitada por la experiencia corporal, permitiendo a la voz revelar la idea, la sonoridad y la emoción ocultas en cada verso, de una forma orgánica y personal.

La dramaturgia en acción es otro de los aspectos que hemos investigado con intensidad en nuestro proceso artístico. La llamamos así porque trabajamos con las imágenes, emociones y movimientos que genera el cuerpo del actor en pleno rendimiento, creando textos contemporáneos a partir de textos clásicos. En este caso utilizaremos La Vida es Sueño de Calderón de la Barca como punto de partida para reencontrarnos con un lenguaje propio, único y personal a la vez que profundizamos en una de la obras cumbres del Siglo de Oro Español.

Hotel Reservations. The Symposium will once again take place at the Hilton Garden Inn El Paso/ University, 111 West University Avenue, El Paso, 79902. A special conference rate of $115 is available to participants that reserve by March 16, 2018; the rate applies to single/double/triple/ quad rooms, and includes a hot buffet breakfast for up to two people per room (request breakfast coupons at reception desk upon check-in). All rates are subject to a 17.5% tax. Parking is complimentary. The group rate applies Monday, April 9 through Saturday, April 14, 2018. Reservations may be made online at www.elpaso.stayhgi.com (the group rate code is “AHCT”), or by calling the hotel directly at 1-915-351-2121.

AHCT Conference Registration. You must be a member of the AHCT to register for the conference. Current membership dues are $65 (or $120 for two years) for faculty and $55 (or $100 for two years) for retired members and students. The registration fee for the conference for all faculty attendees as well as for graduate students who are reading papers or participating in a special session is $125. A late fee of $50 is assessed if registration is paid after March 1, 2018; if registration is not paid in full by March 15, 2018, the participant will be dropped from the program. Registration includes conference attendance, the AHCT annual banquet, transportation to and from the ChamizalWednesday through Saturday evenings for the Drama Festival, and the Friday evening post-performance reception. (Note: a special registration rate of $40 applies to students who do not present papers or attend the banquet. An additional $25 payable at the time of registration purchases tickets for the banquet. The aforementioned late fee also applies to auditor registration.)
